The story behind the stories

Meet Barnabas

Barnabas is more than a character on a page. The children's series was inspired by Harold's real donkey, giving the books a personal connection that children and families can carry with them from one story to the next.

About the author

A life of ministry, teaching & storytelling

A native of South Carolina, Harold Michael Phillips is a graduate of Mid-Continent University in Mayfield, Kentucky, and Covington Theological Seminary in Rossville, Georgia. He holds a Master’s degree in Religious Education and a Doctorate in Theology.

Harold has served as Senior Pastor of Pleasant View Baptist Church in Port Deposit, Maryland, since 1990. In 2003, he received the Salt and Light Award from D. James Kennedy and Coral Ridge Ministries, and he has also been awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Mid-Continent University.

For more than three decades, his ministry has centered on teaching God’s Word and encouraging others in their faith. His writing carries that ministry beyond the church, from biblical teaching and Christian living to the Barnabas children’s books.

Harold and his wife, Corkie, have been married for 43 years. They have five children and fourteen grandchildren—as well as five horses, a dachshund named Bella, and, yes, a donkey named Barnabas.
